** The Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriffs' PBA announces 2011 Scholarships are now available for application **
The Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriffs' Police Benevolent Association is taking action to give back to the community for the continued support we have received. The Deputy Frank J. O'Brien Memorial Scholarship Fund is again seeking eligible high school seniors to apply. As you may be aware, last year we awarded six $500.00 scholarships to local graduating seniors from various public high schools in Rensselaer County. This brings our three year award total to $ 15,000.
Based on fund-raising completed this year, we will be awarding $ 3,500 in scholarships to 2011 graduating seniors. We will be selecting winners from a full pool of applicants rather than by school as we have done in the past. We are requesting assistance from guidance staff at all schools to distribute applications to seniors who are eligible.
As we hope you are aware, the Deputy Sheriff's P.B.A. is the Union which represents the Police Officers employed by the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office. The P.B.A. has no political or party affiliations. Our only hope is that schools will assist in fund-raising efforts in coming years which will directly fund these scholarships. We would also enjoy the opportunity to take part in the schools' Senior Awards Night by presenting this year's winners with their cash awards. Thank you in advance for your continued support and assistance.

THE DEPUTY FRANK J O'BRIEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriffs' PBA would like to announce the creation of the Deputy Frank J O'Brien Scholarship Memorial. Deputy Frank J O'Brien was a well respected deputy of the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office for more than 30 years. During his career in law enforcement Frank was known to the Rensselaer County community as a trusted and friendly face. Frank's passing on May 19, 2007 left all those who knew him with heavy hearts. By the creation of this scholarship we hope to memorialize Frank and carry on his tradition of helping the people of Rensselaer County.
The Deputy Frank J O'Brien scholarship will be awarded to selected graduating high school seniors throughout Rensselaer County. While preference may be given to those interested in criminal justice, all are encouraged to apply. Last year the PBA awarded (7) $500 scholarships to local seniors and we are promising to at least match that this year. Below is a link to the Deputy Frank J O'Brien Memorial Scholarship application and a list of last years winners. Copies of the application have also been sent to the guidance offices of every public high school in Rensselaer County. Students may pick up an application there or may download it from this site. All application need to be mailed to the address listed on the application to be considered. We cannot accept application online at this time.
